In Congress

After the House chaplain resigned under pressure from House Speaker Paul Ryan, Father Patrick Conroy has withdrawn his resignation. Ryan didn’t like the chaplain’s prayer that the impending tax cuts wouldn’t hurt poor people. Ryan is now catching heat from both parties for the debacle.

In the White House

The investigation keeps getting closer to Trump’s business dealings. His attorney, Michael Cohen, is under investigation and his business practices look very shady and could have a major impact on the president. Trump also borrowed millions in unsecured or under-secured debt to build his empire. How’d he get those loans with his track record of bankruptcies?

Congress will take up a proposal by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson to substantially raise the rent for people living in subsidized housing. The poorest Americans would see their rent triple under the program. Look, somebody has to pay for those tax breaks for the rich.

In the White House

Donald Trump is going to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in the next few weeks. Kim met with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in in South Korea and promised to stop scrap his nuclear program if the US promised not to invade. We made that pledge in 2005 and the North Koreans promised to end their nuclear program then, too. The US hasn’t invaded but North Korea is now a nuclear power.

Congress can’t get enough votes to pass a bill to protect Robert Mueller from getting fired by Donald Trump. About all the GOP can muster is advice that firing Mueller would be a bad idea. Clearly, we need a new Congress to protect the integrity of our country.

In the White House

Donald Trump attacked New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman on Twitter for writing a profile of his attorney Michael Cohen. Cohen is under investigation for activities that might be part of his work for Trump. The president denied talking to Haberman despite her interviewing him in the past.

The rats are abandoning the ship and, this week, the chief rat jumped overboard. House Speaker Paul Ryan joined a record number of Republican incumbents who’ve decided to retire this year. Ryan announced he wants to spend more time with his family. In November, let’s help George Holding spend more time with his.

Romley boycotts Sinclair

April 3, 2018 in Blog Posts, Press Release

Ken Romley, Democratic candidate for US House in the Second Congressional District, announced today that he will join others in boycotting corporate media giant Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sinclair’s corporate officers this week forced their news anchors at hundreds of stations across the nation to read a script warning viewers of fake news while calling their coverage fair.

“As we’re deciding about where to place our campaign ads, we’ve decided not to support a corporate media giant that bullies its employees into reading propaganda,” Romley said. “That’s a serious breach of journalistic independence.”

President Trump joined the fray over Sinclair’s highly controversial practice by tweeting his support. According to Politico, the Trump campaign had a deal with Sinclair during the campaign to provide access to the media giant in exchange for better coverage. Apparently, that relationship survived the campaign.

“It seems Sinclair is seeking to become yet another propaganda tool of the Trump administration,” Romley said. “The only way we can stop this biased intervention into broadcast news is to hit them where it hurts – in their corporate pocketbooks.”

Romley joins other congressional candidates who opposed corporate influence in the news room and strongly support the independence of journalists.

Once again, a dysfunctional Congress had to put together a temporary spending bill to keep government open because they can’t pass a budget. Republicans like to say they’ll run government like a business, but if a business ran like this, it would close. It’s time to fire some Members of Congress, starting with George Holding.

Donald Trump kept the turnover rolling at the White House. This time, he fired H. R. McMaster and replaced him with John Bolton, a scary guy who wrote an op-ed on making a first-strike on North Korea.

Congress just got a little bluer when Democrat Conor Lamb won a Pennsylvania special election in a district Donald Trump carried by 19 points. To put that into perspective and what it means for November, Trump only won NC-02 by nine points and our district has fewer rural voters than the one in Pennsylvania.
