The Message Americans Should Hear: October, 2019

October 31, 2019 in Romley Makes the Rounds

Trump is a Traitor. Pence should be President

Both statements are important, and I hope you give me a minute to explain why.

What makes America great is that we have a system allowing huge numbers of people to contribute their best work to the benefit of society. What has been key to our amazing success is a careful balance of personal freedoms vs. societal responsibilities, an understanding that power corrupts so it has to be distributed and balanced, and a reliance on the votes of each citizen to guide the choices that have to be made within this governing framework.

This system is under attack by our President.  Our president does not believe in the American system, but instead believes whatever he wants defines Americanism.

He is supported by people who in their gut know something is not right. These supporters have fallen prey to believing the ends justify the means. They say things like, I don’t like Trump as a person but we are getting the judges we want, or, all politicians are corrupt and at least with Trump I’m getting my taxes cut, or they believe Trump’s comforting lies that our problems are caused by ‘others’; foreigners and corrupt ‘deep state’ government officials. Large numbers of these people will have to support Trump’s removal if it is to be successful.

Trump has undeniably used our American resources for his personal gains. He stopped close to $400 million in Congressionally approved military aid from going to Ukraine so he could pressure them to investigate his political rivals. This is a betrayal of his oath of office and is treasonous. But, once again, if Trump is to be held to account, a significant number of Trump’s supporters must back the effort.

For now, this means supporting making Pence President. Republicans and Independents need to be convinced that impeachment is not about changing the results of the 2016 election. If people believe removing Trump is about getting better policies (e.g. Climate Change, Health Care, Women’s Rights, Economic fairness, etc.) it will not be successful. Those fights are important, but they need to come later and be independent of this effort. People know that Pence will continue Trump’s policies, so accepting Pence as president is the path to getting enough support to actually remove Trump.

For our Democracy’s sake, Republicans have to hear the message: Trump is a Traitor – but it will be tuned out unless it is combined with the message: Pence should be President.

Please join me in getting the word out. Large banners that come in less than a week can be ordered from: https://www.bestofsigns.com/ for less than $10 each. While social media is great, the key is to put the message where Republican’s will see it (overpasses on highways work great – see attached photos). One day our kids will want to know what we did during this critical period in America. Proudly stand as someone willing to fight for America. Print a sign. Hang it up.

PRIMARY ELECTION DAY IS MAY 8! GO VOTE!

In Congress

After the House chaplain resigned under pressure from House Speaker Paul Ryan, Father Patrick Conroy has withdrawn his resignation. Ryan didn’t like the chaplain’s prayer that the impending tax cuts wouldn’t hurt poor people. Ryan is now catching heat from both parties for the debacle.

In the White House

The investigation keeps getting closer to Trump’s business dealings. His attorney, Michael Cohen, is under investigation and his business practices look very shady and could have a major impact on the president. Trump also borrowed millions in unsecured or under-secured debt to build his empire. How’d he get those loans with his track record of bankruptcies?

In Congress

Congress will take up a proposal by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson to substantially raise the rent for people living in subsidized housing. The poorest Americans would see their rent triple under the program. Look, somebody has to pay for those tax breaks for the rich.

In the White House

Donald Trump is going to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in the next few weeks. Kim met with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in in South Korea and promised to stop scrap his nuclear program if the US promised not to invade. We made that pledge in 2005 and the North Koreans promised to end their nuclear program then, too. The US hasn’t invaded but North Korea is now a nuclear power.

In Congress

Congress can’t get enough votes to pass a bill to protect Robert Mueller from getting fired by Donald Trump. About all the GOP can muster is advice that firing Mueller would be a bad idea. Clearly, we need a new Congress to protect the integrity of our country.

In the White House

Donald Trump attacked New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman on Twitter for writing a profile of his attorney Michael Cohen. Cohen is under investigation for activities that might be part of his work for Trump. The president denied talking to Haberman despite her interviewing him in the past.

In Congress

The rats are abandoning the ship and, this week, the chief rat jumped overboard. House Speaker Paul Ryan joined a record number of Republican incumbents who’ve decided to retire this year. Ryan announced he wants to spend more time with his family. In November, let’s help George Holding spend more time with his.

In the White House

Donald Trump’s lawyer needs a lawyer. The FBI raided his office this week, seizing hundreds of documents, including information about payoffs to Stormy Daniels.

In Congress

Mark Zuckerberg will testify before Congress next week to discuss the data breach at Facebook. This scandal highlights the need for people with a background in computer science in Congress. Privacy and security issues will dominate the news for years to come.

In the White House

Trump is starting a trade war with China that will seriously harm North Carolina farmers. In retaliation for Trump’s tariffs, China is threatening to place tariffs on pork, tobacco and soy beans. They will cost North Carolina in revenue and jobs if they go through.

In Congress

Once again, a dysfunctional Congress had to put together a temporary spending bill to keep government open because they can’t pass a budget. Republicans like to say they’ll run government like a business, but if a business ran like this, it would close. It’s time to fire some Members of Congress, starting with George Holding.

In the White House

Donald Trump kept the turnover rolling at the White House. This time, he fired H. R. McMaster and replaced him with John Bolton, a scary guy who wrote an op-ed on making a first-strike on North Korea.

In Congress

Congress just got a little bluer when Democrat Conor Lamb won a Pennsylvania special election in a district Donald Trump carried by 19 points. To put that into perspective and what it means for November, Trump only won NC-02 by nine points and our district has fewer rural voters than the one in Pennsylvania.

In the White House

After pressure from Donald Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe just two days before he was set to retire. Now, Trump is urging the Attorney General’s office to shut down the Mueller investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

In Congress

There’s another special Congressional election this week. This time, the Democrat in PA-18 is neck-in-neck in a district that Trump won by more than 20 points in 2016. If this district flips, watch for Republicans to panic.

In the White House

Donald Trump’s new best friend is Kim Jung Un of North Korea. Kim invited Trump to North Korea and he accepted to the consternation of his foreign policy advisors. Continue reading »
