Romley Makes the Rounds: Jan. 28, 2018

In Congress

Well, Congress reached a deal to prevent a shutdown last week. They’ll keep the government operating until February 8 when we’ll face another showdown. It’s no way to run a country and another example of why we need new leadership in Congress.

In other news, Congress is debating whether or not to protect Robert Mueller from Donald Trump. A bipartisan group of Senators wants to pass legislation that would deter Trump from firing Mueller. Members of the House GOP leadership say that’s not necessary. The fact that we’re even having this discussion is more evidence we need people in the House who will stand up to the president and stand up for the American people.

In the White House

Well, it turns out that Donald Trump did want to fire Mueller last June despite months of denials. Now, he’s talking about firing other people close to the investigation. His stooges went on the talk shows to downplay Trump’s threats to undermine Mueller but it’s clear that this is a president who needs to be held in check and who can’t be trusted.

Net Neutrality Explained / Why it is an issue

January 27, 2018 in Blog Posts

This is a fun video on a serious topic, and points out just how damaging losing net neutrality can be.

It actually understates the case. In the video it demonstrates how losing net neutrality can let companies embark on detrimental business practices. It does that by showing how this might work with something almost all of us are familiar with, buying a hamburger.

Romley Makes the Rounds: Jan. 19, 2018

In Congress

Last night, the Supreme Court stayed the three-judge panels order to redraw North Carolina’s Congressional districts. That means nothing changes—at least not yet. Expect the primary to happen on schedule and expect us to be running against George Holding in November.

In other news, the Republicans in Congress are so dysfunctional, they’re about to shut down the government. Democrats are ready to vote with them to keep us open for business, but Republicans want to keep kicking the DACA fix down the road. The GOP is allowing itself to be held hostage by its right flank again.

In the White House

It appears Donald Trump paid off a porn star to the tune of $130,000 to keep quiet about an affair they had a few years ago. It appears that the conservative base is just fine with that. The news barely peaked anybody’s interest. Can you imagine the response if it had been Obama?

In Congress

Congress is still trying to avoid a government shutdown. If they can’t come to an agreement before next Saturday, then money will stop flowing to many vital services. Republicans control both Houses of Congress and the White House, so if we see this level of dysfunction, we know who to blame.

In the White House

Donald Trump is at it again. He insulted immigrants moving here from Africa and Haiti in a meeting this week that drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. He asked a group of lawmakers meeting with him why we have to take immigrants from “s***hole countries.” His comments are racist and damaging to our credibility with other nations.

Offshore Drilling: Not good for North Carolina

January 16, 2018 in Blog Posts

The Trump Administration and his lackeys in Congress like George Holding are putting one of North Carolina’s most valuable resources at risk by allowing offshore drilling off of our beautiful and vulnerable coast.

We must act to stop this NOW! Tell Donald Trump and George Holding to protect our coast. Sign our petition to stop offshore drilling.

The North Carolina coastline is a state treasure. Millions of people vacation at our shores each year and tens of thousands of Tar Heels rely on tourism, fishing, and related industries for their livelihoods. The Trump administration just granted an exemption to Florida, acknowledging the potential risks of offshore drilling to that state’s economy.

George Holding has said that he supports offshore drilling off of our coast. Let’s send a message to George and let him know that North Carolina deserves the same protections afforded to Florida.

Sign the petition today and protect our coasts!

In Congress

A little good news, at least in the Senate: Doug Jones was sworn in as the Senator from Alabama. Republicans now have a narrow 51-49 advantage.

In the White House

Donald Trump and the White House were in an uproar with the release of Michael Wolff’s scathing depiction of the Trump White House. Trump’s lawyers tried issue a cease-and-desist order against the publisher but they released the book early instead. The book also caused what looks to be a permanent split between Trump and his former political advisor, Steve Bannon. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier…
